Basketball Camp

Who: Individuals with disabilities who want to increase their basketball skills. This program will focus on developing recreational and social skills, as they relate to the sport.

The After School Chess Club is an opportunity for boys and girls ages 5 and up, including adults to develop critical thinking skills while mastering the fundamentals of chess. Participants will constantly be learning new techniques with the possibility to prepare to play in state competitions.

Younger participants must be able to recognize the following:

  • numbers 1-8
  • lower case letters "a-h"
  • upper case letters "K Q B R N"

This class will be an opportunity for kids & Adults to develop critical thinking skills while mastering the fundamentals of chess. They will constantly be learning new techniques and prepare to play in state competitions. Come and learn from one of the best chess teachers in the state. He has students who are rated 6th 24th, & 46 in the state and currently one of his students is the Jr. High State Champion. He also is Chess advisor for BYU, Provo High, and Dixon Jr. High.

Each session is 6 weeks long and sessions are offered throughout the school year.

Classes are held each Thursday from 4:00 - 5:15 p.m. at the Pleasant Grove Community Center, 547 South Locust Ave.

Participants can register for an entire session for $38.00 or attend individual classes for $8.00 per class.

Discount: $6 per class is available at the Community Center for those who register for two or more sessions at once and must register early for discount to be applied.

Earn Your Chess Merit Badge

Merit Badge Finishing class will be determined by Instructor and participant at the end of Session. Must have at least 4 boys. Because of the extra 2-hour Class this will require an additional $10 fee.

Pleasant Grove Recreation Center offers children dance classes for ages 4 to 17. These classes offer a variety of dance styles, from traditional technique to modern dance styles. All classes will be once a week from September 2018 through May 2019. Each class will last for approx. 50 minutes and include contemporary, ballet, hip hop, and jazz. There will be a dance recital at the end of the year. The fee is a $75 non refundable registration fee (includes costume fee) and then a fee of $30/month. Classes will begin the week of September 10th

*Prorated tuition fees for late signups or absent dancers will not be given.

Tap Dance

This beginning tap class will give you the opportunity to learn rhythm, coordination, and basic tap progressions. A fun and energetic class that will improve posture, confidence, and tap technique. Beginning class ages 5-8 and 9-17.

9-17 year olds: Monday 4:00 - 4:50 p.m.

4 Year Old Class

This class will introduce 4 year old children to dance. Classes will incorporate movement corresponding to music. It is a great way to introduce your child to dance with several genres of dance including ballet and jazz. Classes meet once a week.

This class is a beginner class encouraging flexibility, musicality, and coordination. Dancers will be taught several genres of dance including jazz, contemporary, hip hop, and basic ballet.

McKenzie Tomlinson

McKenzie began assisting in our dance program starting in 2011. She has taken years of dance classes and has proven herself passionate and competent about dance. Tap has been a passion of McKenzie's for many many years and she has won numerous awards for her talent. We are excited to for her to take over the instruction this year!

Overview

Teaching the participants different types of dance movement, increasing strength and flexibility, while building social skills.

Class Layout

  1. 7-10 Minutes Warmup and Stretch
  2. 7-10 Minutes Center Floor Work
  3. 7-10 Minutes Across the Floor Work
  4. 20-25 Minutes Choreography
  5. 5 Minutes Cool Down/Strength Training

Class Appropriate Attire

Participants will be expected to wear clothing appropriate for dancing, stretching, and moving each week to class. An example of appropriate clothing would be:

  • Tights or leotards
  • Bike shorts
  • Leggings

Ages 6-12 and up should wear a more form fitting top in order to allow the dance instructor to watch complete body movements. Younger students, (ages 3-5) can wear a t-shirt if desired. Tops should completely cover the torso, (no midriff shirts). Ballet slippers or dance shoes must be worn to class (no socks only).

Attire questions can be directed to the dance instructor the first day of class.

Jeans, baggy clothes or other casual clothing will not be tolerated. In future months, participants may be asked to wear color assigned attire depending on skill level.

Types of Movement

Participants will be taught in basic ballet, jazz, modern, hip hop, contemporary, and lyrical movement. They will be expected to learn all movement taught in class regardless of personal genre preference.

Concerts

Christmas Program

We will have a small Christmas program for all age groups. Concert will be at the recreation center.

Spring Concert

Classes will be taught 2-3 dances for participating in the Spring Concert. Dancers must attend class throughout the season in order to learn the movement required for them to dance with their class. In order to participate in the Spring Concert attendance at 70% of the classes should be used as a guideline. If the teacher feels that a student may have missed excessive amounts of class and are unable to learn the movement, parents may schedule with the teacher additional times for dancers to learn necessary steps for the Concert. Additional fees may apply for these classes.

Summer Dance Camp

We will be holding a dance camp June 20th-22nd. Cost is just $25 per child. We will have two different classes:

  1. 4-7 year olds: 11:00 - 11:55 a.m.
    • Fair Princess Day
    • Super Hero Day
    • Crazy Hair and Sock Day
  2. 8-16 year olds: 1:00 - 1:55 p.m.
    • Technique class taught all 3 days

6 Week Summer Gymnastics

This six week program offers the same structure and lesson plan as the school year program which introduces children, 3 and up, to basic gymnastic skills in a non competitive environment. Instruction will include the different apparatus such as uneven and parallel bars, balance beam, vaulting horse, and tumbling. Classes begin early June. September-April Gymnastics

Learn balance and skills in a non competitive environment. Participants are taught to have fun and try new things. Classes will teach different gymnastic apparatus such as uneven and parallel bars, balance beam, vaulting horse and tumbling mats. Children are worked at their own ability level to build coordination and confidence. Intermediate classes are also available. Classes fill up quickly and class size is limited. Classes will be held in the new Community Center on Monday or Wednesday afternoons. Registration is continuous on a space available basis. Please call the front desk at 801-785-6172 for information and available spots. There is a waiting list available for full classes. Program runs from September – March and will be a monthly tuition price due by the first of each month. Class enrollement is set up in two sessions. Sept - Dec and Jan - March. Come be a part of our Summer Kindergarten Readiness Program!

This program is intended for kids going into Kindergarten in the fall. Classes are held on Mon/Wed/Fri from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM. Program is limited to 20 children, so sign up today online or at the Recreation Center.

Omega Martial Arts teaches a hybrid of Taekwondo, Hapkido, Self Defense, Judo, Jiu Jitsu, Okinawan Weaponry for a well-rounded martial artist. All of our Omega Youth, Adult and Family Programs are designed to help develop focus, teamwork, discipline, fitness memory, coordination, control and balance. Students will progress through a designed curriculum and belt system appropriate for their age group. Our instructors are known for their superior technique and diverse martial art expertise. TLC - Babysitting Class 2018-2019

This class is designed for boys and girls ages 9 to 15 who want to learn some skills in order to become a "Great" Baby Sitter. It is an all day camp that will include:

  • Ins & Outs of Babysitting - Your responsibility as a sitter
  • Child Care - Diapering, bottles, feeding, sanitation, and clean up
  • Safety & Emergencies - Keeping kids safe, phone etiquette, bumps & scrapes
  • Games & Fun - Activities to do with the children
  • The camp will also include a sitter's kit which will include things to take along Babysitting. Lunch will be included

Summer Chess Club 2019

Description:

The chess club is a great way to learn the game of chess including basic concepts, strategies, and how to apply these techniques. The advances class is where you can brush up on your skills and learn new and advanced strategies to use against your opponents.

The class will end with a tournament on Thursday, Aug 2 for all participants. The tournament will include lunch and awards.

  • Ages: 5-18 years old
  • Registration: Now until May 28 (Register by May 20th - if getting a t-shirt)
  • Class Day: Thursdays 10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
  • Dates: June 13 - Aug 1
  • Where: Class will be held at the Recreation Center
  • Fee: $48 with shirt and $ 58 with / Merit Badge option (Late fee of $5 will be added after the 28th. $6.00 discount if no shirt is ordered. Register by May 20th in order to guarantee a shirt)
  • No Class 4th of July week

Beginners (Ages 5-12) Beginners will learn the basic concepts, strategies and how to apply those techniques to move against your opponent. Beginning players should be able to recognize the numbers 1 - 8 and know the lower case letters a-h and upper case letters K Q B R N.

Advanced (Ages 10-15) This class is where participants can brush up on skills and learn new strategies

Tournament, awards and pizza party for all participants will be held on Thursday, Aug 1- This class will go from 9 to 2:00pm- maybe shorter depending on how many students will be attending that day.

Boys 11-18 May take the Class to earn their chess Merit Badge. To fulfill all of the requirements we will hold an extra class on Aug 3rd. Cost will be an extra $10.

Summer Swiss Chess Tournament

Rules:

USCF rules apply; however, this is NOT a USCF rated tournament

USCF rating will be used first; otherwise ratings will be assigned, by age or by the tournament director.

Time control: game in 30 minutes per player / Last round will be 45min per game. Each child will play all rounds.

    Spring

    The Pleasant Grove Recreation Department has teamed up with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources to offer a community youth fishing program. This program is open to all youth ages 7 through 14 years old. This program will educate youth on casting, knot tying, proper use of fishing equipment, fish biology and diversity, aquatic ecology, water cycle and quality, fisheries management and ethics, fishing opportunities in Utah and most importantly - FUN!

    Classes will be held on Wednesdays from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM, for six weeks, beginning this spring with a "fish fry". Each class is 90 minutes, with the first half hour instructing participants on the above mentioned topics and the last 60 minutes, fishing. Classes will be held at the Manila Creek Pond, located at 3300 North 900 West. The Manila Creek pond is stocked with Rainbow Trout and Blue Gill. The supervisor, Shaun Hemenway along with the dedicated hunter volunteers will be working with the participants in groups of five or six. This is a great chance to experience Utah’s fabulous outdoors. All equipment is available for use.

    Intro to STEM Using LEGO

This project-based camp, designed by Play-Well instructors, combines the basic format of our core engineering-themed programs based on the world of Minecraft. Students will explore real-world concepts in physics, engineering, and architecture while building their favorite Minecraft objects. Students will have a blast, even without any prior experience with Minecraft or LEGO.

    STEM Challenge using LEGO

    Power on your engineering skills with Play-Well TEKnologies and tens of thousands of LEGO®! Apply realworld concepts in physics, engineering, and architecture through engineer-designed projects such as Catapults, Pneumatic Cranes, Arch Bridges, and Battletracks! Design and build as never before, and explore your craziest ideas in a supportive environment. An experienced instructor will challenge new and returning students to engineer at the next level. There is no prerequisite for this course.
